Dentists across the country are busy working on new products and improving their services, as consumers demand better care.
Dr Paul Stoffels from the National Association of Dental Surgeons said dentists should have a good relationship with patients and that the best way to improve patient satisfaction is to have good relationships with patients.
“A relationship with the patient is the foundation of good practice,” he said.
“In terms of improving patient satisfaction, I would say there are four steps: patient care, patient education, education and patient safety.”
He said the biggest problem is the lack of education.
“When we get into the process of providing dental care, we have to educate patients and patients are often more than willing to learn how to improve their dental care,” he explained.
“They are not going to learn it from a textbook.
They have to learn from their own experience.”
So there is a very high learning curve when it comes to dental care.
“Stoffels said the main way to increase patient satisfaction was to develop a patient education and education system.”
Dentistry is the most difficult part of a patient care program.
We’re going to have to do all this work to get to the point where people understand and want to get the dental treatment they need,” he added.”
We have to take care of them, we don’t want them to think that we don�t care.
“That means we have got to get our students to understand how to get their dental treatment.”
