According to a 2017 report by the American Dental Association, more than 11 million Americans are working in dental practices, but they represent only a small portion of dentists nationwide.
The organization estimates that more than 1 million dentists were employed in 2015, and about 6% of dentist jobs in the country were in the practice of oral health, the AP reported.
A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Public Health looked at a list of 7,000 dental practices nationwide, and found that the vast majority of dentistry positions are vacant.
That study found that more dental practices were shuttered than in the last decade.
The study said more than 2,000 practices were closed between 2000 and 2010.
The report also noted that the practice rate dropped from 25.3% in 2000 to 18.7% in 2010.
In 2020, the practice rates dropped to 16.5%, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The AP reported that while the practice population has grown in the past decade, the overall number of people practicing dentistry has dropped, and that some dentists have been losing jobs to fill vacant positions.
